DIVINE PLACES

'Divine Places was an unforgettable night out at the theatre. The motto of PYT is 'inspire, challenge, excite. Mission accomplished.'
Tommy, Murphy, Lowdown

'Divine Places' connected past and present, sacred and sublime in a celebration of the many beliefs and religions that are found in the Fairfield community. 'Divine Places' brought together these diverse communities to reflect on and respond to the question - how does faith both unite and divide us.

Fairfield LGA is one of the most culturally diverse suburbs in Australia. For generations newly arrived immigrants and refugees have made this suburb their home, as a result the region is also home to nearly every religion in the world. A tour of through Fairfield will uncover places of divinity such as First Nation Sacred Sites, the Lao Temple Wat Phrayortkeo Dhammayanaram, the Bonnyrigg Turkish Mosque, Fairfield Uniting Church, Cambodian Temple Vat Khemarangsaram, Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church and the Mingyue Lay Buddhist temple. These diverse communities have lived side by side relatively harmoniously for many years. However, how much do the different communities in Fairfield truly interact and learn from one another. Do they celebrate and rejoice their differences? Or does faith cause further division?

'Divine Places' shone a light on this issue by examining role faith and difference plays in the lives of young people growing up surrounded by diversity. It looked to the next generation for a way to encourage greater interfaith harmony, which is one of the most important issues we face.

'Divine Places' was developed over 12 months. It involved a team of 14 professional artists, 10 early career artists and over 50 young performers. The project included cultural action forums, vox pop interviews, 'Capturing the Faith' a photographic workshop and exhibition, a bus tour, the world premiere of 'Covenant' by Alana Valentine and performances at the First Nation Significant Site Clear Paddock Creek, Lao Wat Phrayortkeo Dhammayanarani, the Bonnyrigg Turkish Mosque, the Fairfield Uniting Church and the Fairfield School of the Arts.

'Divine Places' was produced by PYT | Fairfield. The premiere season was performed across Fairfield in May 2005 .
