CABRAMATTA STORY BY KHOA DO
A Girl. A Cook. A Gangster. A Story of migration, freedom and love.
'Cabrammat Story' was a new play by Khoa Do that offered a fresh perspective on the infamous suburb of Cabramatta. In 2003, Cabramatta was widely regarded as the drug capital of Australia and it had a reputation as a dangerous place to visit. The experience of young people growing up in the area was vastly different to picture painted by the media. Khoa Do was one of those young people. He grew up in Cabramatta and was proud of his home town. He was also proud of the large refugee and migrant community who called it home. A commission from PYT gave Khoa the perfect opportunity to tell a different, more positive view of the suburb he loved. Khoa worked with 13 local young people to develop a wildly successful play that changed the way wider community viewed Cabramatta and the community who lived there.
'Cabramatta Story' was a romantic comedy about two young people from different cultures falling in love over pho. Part mystery, part love story, and part slapstick, 'Cabramatta Story' explored the historical roots of the Cabramatta and how it has evolved into one of the most diverse suburbs of Sydney.
'Cabramatta Story' was commissioned by PYT | Fairfield in 2003. The world premiere season was at the Cabramatta Anglican Church in 2003. 'Cabramatta Story' was remounted for a regional tour in October 2004. The tour included shows in Fairfield, Cabramatta, Young, Junee, Wagga Wagga, Batlow and Canberra in 2004.
