A BOY & A BEAN BY NICK ATKINS
'Almost impeccably delivered, Atkins' script is superb. It's original, it's funny throughout and when it needs to, it certainly gets you thinking.'
Jack Smith, The Brag
'The questions you didn't know you were asking are raised and answered in this beautiful production that is a lyrical and verbal joy as much as it is anything else. The man (Nick Atkins) really understands a sentence, and it is total ear candy to be given the opportunity to watch and listen to his beautiful performance.'
Lisa Thatcher, Theatre Blog
'A boy & A Bean makes a worth contribution to the canon of self-devised, one-man gay and lesbian plays, and tells an important, relatable story.'
Marynn Wright, Stage Whispers
Nick Atkins walked head first into the Marriage Equality debate in the visceral, off-beat and tender contemporary comedy-drama 'A Boy & A Bean'.
At first there was a boy. Then there was a bean. After this everything gets a little blurry. Enter a world where giants dwell in suburban houses, beanstalks take root in corrupted soil and a boy called Jack strays between love, legislation and folk lore.
'A Boy & A Bean' was inspired by the prevalence of the Marriage Equality debate throughout the media and the controversial history surrounding the proposed legislation. Nick Atkins follows the journey of Jack in search of the giants that have dominated the recent conversation in a compassionate, courageous and crafty re-framing of the issue.
'A Boy & Bean' was co-presented by PACT centre for emerging artists and the Q Theatre in association with the 2014 Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras. 'A Boy & A Bean' premiered at PACT before touring to the Q Theatre and the International Dublin Gay Theatre Festival 2014.
